Old Drive-in Theatre

The North Western Drive-in cinema opened on Xmas Eve 1968 and remained open until 1988. It was run by Michael Kelly and his family for the duration of this time, with the land recently being sold for a private portable building business.

The Drive-In was a large well-built drive-in considering it was in a town with a small population. A substantial outlay was made by the Kelly family to create one of the best looking drive-ins in Northern Victoria, from the solid entrance surrounds to the snack bar and ramps.

On weekends, there would often be a queue of cars stretching back a kilometre or more along the road leading to the main entrance, as people travelled from surrounding towns such as Wycheproof, Donald and Sea Lake.

Local young people often walked out to the drive-in and took advantage of the ‘sit-in’.
