Birchip is a fun, safe, family friendly community and home to the famous "Mallee Bull". We are located on the southern edge of the Mallee in N.W. Victoria, approximately 320 km from Melbourne.
Birchip is a the perfect place to stop for lunch on your way through to larger regional cities such as Mildura and Swan Hill. Birchip has a family friendly park right in the centre of town opposite the lunch spots. The park is fenced and children love playing on the green lawn. Best of all, in the warmer months, the local swimming pool is right next door!
We are a small rural town with a strong sense of communtiy committed to ensuring that residents and visitors are treated with respect and tolerance and have access to first class facilites and opportunities to be able to participate in a diverse range of activities. Local community groups, sporting clubs, school and the BCG host an interesting selection of events and functions throughout the year. They range from a B & S ball and a Quarterhorse Race Meeting to Field days and expos. These events attract visitors from all over Australia as does Tchum Lake, located 8 km east of Birchip.
The Birchip P-12 school is renowned as a dynamic school with approximately 215 students and 40 staff. It has extensive facilities and a joint use school-community library. The Birchip P-12 school offers a diverse range of programs to ensure students achieve academic, personal and vocational success.
Birchip has a range of Clubs and Groups to become involved in including a Lions Club, Men's Shed, Neighbourhood House, RSL, Senior Citizens, Probus, Drama Group, Bingo, Choir, CWA, Craft Group, Youth Group, Playgroup, Maternal & Child Health and a Pre-school.
The town has an Anglican Church, St Mary's Catholic Church, a Uniting Church, Birchip Christian Fellowship and St Vincent de Paul.
East Wimmera Health Service provides quality care at the local Birchip campus where a range of Acute, Aged Care and Primary Care services are delivered. A local Doctor provides ongoing care as required and a 24-hour Accident and Emergency service provides resuscitation and stabilisation.
Birchip is also home to the BCG (Birchip Cropping Group) - a farmer-driven agricultural organisation conducting applied research and extension on all the major crops grown in the Wimmera and Mallee.
The Birchip Community Leisure Centre facilities are first class and available to the sporting clubs and the community for functions. It's home to a range of sports, including tennis, cricket, golf, squash, netball, hockey and football.
The Birchip-Watchem Bulls compete in the North Central football league, a family friendly competition incorporating junior and senior football, netball and hockey all at the one venue. There are also facilities and clubs for bowls, aero sports, harness racing, water sports, swimming, archery, hang gliding and a range of social competitions and exercise classes.
The Birchip History Museum is located at the corner of the five way intersection in the old court house, built in 1914. It provides local history research, a large selection of catalogued photos, displays and collections.
Birchip has a number of local retail businesses, businesses that service the agriculture sector and a range of tradesmen that work in the local and surrounding areas.
Birchip is part of the Shire of Buloke and has a town population of 822 and an area population of 1200. Other townships within the shire are Charlton, Donald, Sea Lake, Wycheproof, Watchem, Berriwillock, Culgoa, Nandaly and Nullawil and they all have a range of exciting events and tourist attractions, making it worth a visit.
