HISTORY OF THE Birchip Cemetery

It is reported in the first edition of the Birchip Advertiser and Mallee Agriculturist of May 15th 1891, that the trustees elected were: President, Mr. W. C. Cutts; Secretary, Mr. J. B. Hillgrove; Treasurer, Mr. W. Beckham; Trustees; Messrs J. Ryan, G. V. Mogg, J.Harvey, J. B. Hillgrove, W. Beckham and C. Cutts.

The same paper of 15th May, 1891 reported the first burial in the cemetery on Thursday 7th May.  The occasion being the death of Mr. Andrew Esler Snr., whose remains were interred in that portion allotted to the Presbyterian denomination.

On June 12th it was reported in the local paper that Mr. Hillgrove, secretary of the cemetery trust, had received from the department through Mr. Taverner M.L.A., tracings of the area reserved for cemetery purposes along with the gazettal of the permanent reservation of the site.

An area immediately adjoining the East of the original cemetery site of 5 acres also was secured for the purposes of a lawn cemetery and car park and the first interment took place in 1975.  In 1983, the Apex Club’s offer to donate a Cremation Niche Wall was accepted.
